In this video Christian asks a much asked question. That "work v life" balance one. Do we live in a culture that asks us to work the wrong way. Or does it ask us to work the right way and reward those who make a clear division between "work" and "life" and spend more time energy and health points on the latter over the former?

My take is that for those who are pretty picky and have less amount of patience - AI does not cut for you. It works great though - it comes up with a pretty good bassline (of which really helpful in times of writer's block), but if you already have a specific take, yet need to tweak here and there to adjust when you're racing to get it done - it pretty much is a drag, rather that you'd go on and press record on you playing the line you wanted. That's what AI is about - a tool. A drug. An apparatus. It should never be in control of you - YOU'RE the one who's in control.

"The only thing that matters is what comes out of the speakers". ~ Andrew Scheps. It is a waste of time discussing if new features are good or not, they are tools, and as always it depends on how the tool is used. Like a hammer, they don't do anything on their own.

In regards to AI I use SynthesizerV for vocals. You need to write the melody, you need to write the lyrics. The AI side is turning those notes and words into vocals. I am able to write songs now with vocals because of this software. You can’t clone Taylor Swift with it but there are voices you can choose made from professional singers. Have a look at it and see if it a positive way AI can be used. Not everyone can afford a session singer or can sing. Will it take away jobs? Well I was never able to afford a session singer any way, so it can’t replace something I never paid for in the first place. Do soft synth clones take jobs from analogue synth builders?

(At 5:29 - 6:45) I’m old enough to remember when CD technology first hit the market. When I was very young I attended a reveal event when an industry rep introduced it to the public for the first time. There was a huge push to get public buy-in because it meant discarding vinyl records and all the current analog tech. One grey-haired gentleman (probably in his 50’s at the time) passionately voiced his objections insisting that the new digital technology was basically ripping the “soul” out of the analog world. I thought to my younger self that “everybody should just get on board because you can’t stop progress”. It took many years but I finally appreciate and share that man’s sentiment. On another note, it has been apparent for well over a decade that Apple is not invested in the DAW space or the culture. They're not doing any serious development in that area. They just keep adding more gratuitous crumbs to an ancient piece of software at a snail’s pace, presumably to appease those creative customers and keep them stuck in the Apple ecosystem. A true DAW paradigm shift is long overdue at Apple, even if it doesn't yield billions in revenue on its own.

I would argue they have just shifted their market. Apple is still huge in the “beat making” world, and that is a huge market right now. And they have features catered to live performances, classical musicians scoring a film, and they have features for someone recording a podcast. I just think it takes too long for a specific audience to notice anything because Apple is rotating which group they cater to. The Drum Machine and Sampler updates recently were game changers in the rap and hip hop scene, and the drummer and keys and piano are huge for singer songwriters or demo tracks and the like. A lot of Daws are hyper focused, but where Logic shines is that it isn’t, and that’s also what makes it appear to lag behind in certain areas as well.

@@ghost-user559 All true and valid. I don't know how many of us are left in the game but I've been with Apple since its inception. If Logic was a big money maker they would've completely modernized it long ago instead of slapping new gems on top of old code and UX a handful of times in a generation (literally). Once you've tasted the alternatives, Apple just isn't as sweet anymore. I think it's getting harder and harder to win new converts from the future populations. As such, Logic's user base has plateaued and will never really expand significantly. But what do I know? 🙃

AI is not developed enough and when included in a DAW, it makes you click to assemble rather than be a composer. Logic 11 is a cheat in my opinion but for non-composers, it's a a toy for those who don't have musical talent but instead "programming talent"

AI is such a huge broad over arching term which isn’t all that helpful in discussions. We have to first discuss what we mean and how we differentiate between different purposes and uses of it. I’d be really interested in being involved in this discussion as a conservatoire trained composer and musician who is very tech savvy has been following the machine learning scene for a long time. I am the nuanced voice.

I think, listening to a piece of music, there’s an assumption that some thought, feeling or work went into making it. I just have no interest in listening to a song that was shat out in 2 mins by an algorithm that copies the hard work of talented musicians and repackages it as something new. When music is this easy to make, what value does it have? Thats my thoughts on AI

Thr problem with all this technology is... the bad is not so bad anymore but now nothing stands out, nothing is good enough anymore because there is not intelligence anymore, there is not talent and skills. Everything now sounds "good" and is totally forgettable at the same time, there is not "art", is not bringing anything new anymore.

I was relieved in one of your previous videos to hear you were finally moving to Cubase. Cubase has had this "stem splitting" tech for a couple of years now linking to another Steinberg programme called Spectral Layers which allows you to do so much more than just split mixes. Apple has just done the usual catch up and just taken the shiny bit of the tech and pretending they've created a revolution. Whilst trying so hard not to be a Logic hater, Cubase just IS so much better, it always has been. Look forward to see how you get on with Cubase/Nuendo/Spectral Layers.

I started to go through the comments but didn't get all the way through them. My apologies if this is there: I'm just a hobbyist musician/ composer, but it is quite obvious to me that none of the comments about whether ai music is a good thing are relevant, in the same way that discussing whether a tsunami is a good thing or a bad thing. It's coming and you need to learn how to surf it. Look at the advances in the last year, apply that to next year and then answer whether the general public care whether or not it was done by ai. There will still be creativity, in the way it is used. Times change and those who learn how to change with them will still succeed.

AI, what is there in this world that is real? Everything breaks down eventually and decays, we pass one day, look inside anything and there will be more things...and more things, everything is moving, nothing is still in the universe, so what is real? AI is just yet another thing that is not real, things come and go, the industrial revolution saw many people lose their jobs and others gain jobs, it goes on and on. Things will be invented that will change the way we do things, the one thing that does not change in all of this, is our breath, coming in and going out, one breath at a time. Within that breath is a power that goes beyond imagination because it brings us our life. Life is not from when we are born to when we die, that is the time we have with our life. Life comes with every breath that is the most fundamental thing in this universe. Life is infinite, the body and mind will go back to the earth but the life within the body will move on back to the infinite ocean from where it came. What does AI mean in all of that? Just another twig in the stream of life.

Yeahhh AI is going to kick in hard in 1 - 2 years time. Midi to string section, AI vocals, AI orchestration, full track generation with customisable parameters. The tech is already out there and it's pretty impressive. Once the fidelity is there, the whole music game will be flipped on its head. There's not really any other way it can be. This is generative AI by the way, not some algorithmic midi generator. AI will sound 'human', it will have adjustable randomness, mistakes, clicks, scratches, anything that it's been trained on.

Good on you for speaking your truth here. At this point in my life I take only the work that I want to take and it will be also about observing the person I work with as part of that process. I usually have been lucky to be able to see around corners and have a sense of people right off, but also not question who I am or what I have done either. I look ahead and am not a rear view mirror person. There are opportunities out there. I do many things in my lab here in the Northwest of USA and it's working out for me well. I escaped the Hollywood thing a while ago, but they still call, so that's good and say to me "great work as always". So I guess that's something. The relationships are good for me and I seem to work well with people even if they are not happy people and uptight. I just let them come around to what is important.

If I use AI, only in VERY small doses and NEVER in scoring. I love doing it myself, but again I started with pen and paper back in the day and not just classical, but done a lot of music as a player as a trumpet and piano, and drummer. Jazz, Film sessions etc. and pop music even a polka gig or two. lol Also scored for the Imago Dance Theater and Mask Ensemble and done 4-5 show if I remember.

Rather similar to when generative fill turned up in Photoshop, the AI things in Logic seem to belong to a different product, for people who don't really want to compose, imagine or just fiddle about. Music is only a semi-conscious activity. Automating it... negates it. The tension is between AI (backward and borrowed) vs human agency will only get starker in creative software ...

AI is a complicated subject and has been around since the 50s. It has moments of excitement followed by a spectacular crashes (this is the 3rd wave). Logic 11 has given us 3 types of AI application. The saturation plug in attempts to replicate classic equipment - I always feel this can be replicated by traditional programming, just needs smart people and the benefit is you can get something better than the original - so a Meh! Stem splitter is a pure tool and I think is where AI is at its strongest and supports the artist. Like image processing it has real benefits and does specific things very well allowing creators to do something original. So thumbs up. The 3rd is the "session" generative AI. Here there are a herd of elephants in the room which just get ignored. To their credit Apple use symbolic (like midi data but probably uses something else) to synthesize audio rather than audio data itself so the results are better and can be manipulated. But you used the perfect word "Mediocre". I trained a model to generate Chinese melodies - it was better than me but only because of be being totally hopeless writing my own! I think generative AI is the crash and burn scenario - It uses massive computing power which is uneconomic (This hardware isn't becoming radically cheaper or faster). Even the cutdown Logic session AI pushes the machine and even the M4 NPU will only improve things slightly. But when running locally there is always a limited resource. In generative AI creativity = temperature (it is a parameter that defines how much or little the most obvious solution will be selected) . Temperature is really randomness - creativity is rarely random. Copyright is always an issue and the newer generative audio tools tend to ignore this (which is why they are free) and some of the recent offerings leave that problem with you. Meta are an exception here as they train with licensed data. Music is largely rules based with considered rule breaking. AI writes its own rules - good luck with that! This was not written by ChatGPT because it contains opinion - is that so bad!! I could go on but...

Chromaverb absolutely is not the worst reverb of all time. But you do, really, really, have to spend a good deal of time with it, noting how the different parameters (particularly Distance) interact with the various reverb models. And also to recognise that some of the models are non-linear and not exactly easy to get on with. But 'Room' for smaller spaces and 'Smooth Space' for larger are good starting points.

Heh. To your question about AI... Well, I feel it's enabling people more people with bad taste than it's enabling people that are just coming up short on skills. And, that makes natural human sense, if for no other reason than the Dunning-Kruger effect. I've been encountering AI-made songs that are supposed to be Depeche Mode tracks. None of them actually sound like Depeche Mode, but bands that followed in their footsteps. Yet I keep running into people who think they sound "juuust like them". And it just doesn't. And, as for work... I live in Oklahoma, and have no taste for country music. This community is already cagey, and nervously selfish without that last factor. So, I end up doing absolutely nothing and have no realistic hope of getting anywhere. LOL
